Percy Bysshe Shelley was born in 1792 to a wealthy family in Sussex, England. He was a brilliant and precocious child, and he began writing poetry at an early age. In 1811, he met Harriet Westbrook, and they married the following year. However, the marriage was not a happy one, and Shelley soon fell in love with Mary Godwin, the daughter of the philosopher William Godwin.

Mary Shelley was a brilliant and independent young woman. She had already published a novel, Frankenstein, when she met Shelley. The two of them fell deeply in love, and they began a passionate affair. In 1814, they eloped to Switzerland, where they lived for several years. During this time, they wrote some of their most famous works, including Shelley's Ozymandias and Ode to the West Wind, and Mary Shelley's Valperga.

In 1816, the Shelleys met Lord Byron, a charismatic and controversial poet. Byron was immediately drawn to Mary Shelley, and he began an affair with her. The three of them spent the summer together at the Villa Diodati on Lake Geneva. It was during this time that Mary Shelley wrote her most famous novel, Frankenstein.

The Shelleys' lives were marked by tragedy. Harriet Shelley drowned herself in 1816, and Mary Shelley's daughter, Clara, died in 1818. In 1822, Percy Bysshe Shelley drowned in a boating accident. Mary Shelley was devastated by her husband's death, but she continued to write. She published several more novels, including The Last Man and Mathilda, and she also wrote biographies of her husband and Lord Byron.
