Miller was born in New York City in 1917. He attended New York University and Columbia University, where he studied economics and labor relations. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Miller worked as a union organizer for the United Steelworkers of America. In 1966, he was hired as the executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association.

At the time, the Major League Baseball Players Association was a weak and ineffective organization. The players had no collective bargaining rights and their salaries were often low. Miller quickly set about changing this. He organized the players and led them through a series of strikes and negotiations that resulted in significant gains for the players.

In 1968, Miller negotiated the first collective bargaining agreement between the MLBPA and the owners of Major League Baseball. This agreement gave the players the right to negotiate their salaries and working conditions. It also established a pension plan for retired players.

Miller also played a key role in the desegregation of Major League Baseball. In 1947, Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers. However, it was not until the 1960s that African American players began to be regularly signed by Major League teams. Miller's leadership of the MLBPA helped to create a more welcoming environment for African American players.

In addition to his work on behalf of baseball players, Miller was also a vocal advocate for social justice. He was a strong supporter of civil rights and the labor movement. He also spoke out against the Vietnam War and the arms race.

Miller retired from the MLBPA in 1983. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003. He died in 2012 at the age of 95.

Marvin Miller was a visionary leader who transformed the world of baseball and American society. His work on behalf of baseball players improved their working conditions and salaries. He also played a key role in the desegregation of Major League Baseball and the expansion of the game to new markets. Miller was a true pioneer who left a lasting legacy on the game of baseball and American society.
