Schwartz's first major success came in 1971 with the musical Godspell. Godspell is a rock musical based on the Gospel of Matthew. The musical was a critical and commercial success, and it launched Schwartz's career as a major musical theater composer.
Schwartz followed up the success of Godspell with a number of other hit musicals, including Pippin (1972),The Magic Show (1974),and The Baker's Wife (1976). In 1991, Schwartz wrote the music and lyrics for the Disney animated film Pocahontas. The film was a critical and commercial success, and it won Schwartz an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the song "Colors of the Wind".
In 2003, Schwartz wrote the music and lyrics for the Broadway musical Wicked. Wicked is a prequel to the classic story of The Wizard of Oz. The musical was a critical and commercial success, and it has become one of the most popular Broadway musicals of all time. Schwartz has also written the music and lyrics for a number of other Broadway musicals, including Children of Eden (1991),Working (2000),and Rags (2010).
