Welcome to the latest issue of Historical Wyoming, the quarterly journal of the Wyoming State Historical Society. In this issue, we take a journey through Wyoming's rich history, from its earliest days to the present. We explore the lives of Wyoming's pioneers, cowboys, explorers, and cattlemen. We learn about Wyoming's mining, agriculture, transportation, and politics. And we discover the unique culture and environment of this great state.

Wyoming's Earliest History

The first people to inhabit Wyoming were nomadic hunters and gatherers who arrived in the region around 10,000 BC. These early inhabitants lived in small bands and relied on the land for their food and shelter. Over time, these bands developed into more complex societies, with permanent settlements and a more sophisticated economy.

The first Europeans to visit Wyoming were Spanish explorers in the 16th century. These explorers were searching for gold and silver, but they found little of value. In the 18th century, French trappers and traders began to explore Wyoming. These trappers were interested in the region's fur resources, and they soon established a number of trading posts in the area.

Wyoming's Pioneer Era

The American pioneer era in Wyoming began in the mid-19th century. In 1843, the first wagon train of American settlers crossed the Rocky Mountains and entered Wyoming. These settlers were looking for new land to farm and ranch. Over the next few decades, thousands of settlers poured into Wyoming, and the region quickly became a major center of agriculture and ranching.

The pioneer era in Wyoming was a time of great hardship and danger. The settlers had to contend with harsh weather conditions, disease, and attacks from Native Americans. But they persevered, and by the end of the 19th century, Wyoming had become a thriving territory.

Wyoming's Statehood and the 20th Century

Wyoming became a state in 1890. In the early 20th century, the state's economy continued to grow, thanks to the development of mining, oil, and gas. Wyoming also became a major tourist destination, thanks to its beautiful scenery and its rich history.

In the second half of the 20th century, Wyoming's economy declined somewhat, due to the decline of the mining and oil industries. However, the state's tourism industry continued to grow, and Wyoming remained a popular destination for visitors from around the world.

Wyoming Today

Today, Wyoming is a modern and prosperous state. The state's economy is based on a diverse mix of industries, including mining, energy, agriculture, and tourism. Wyoming is also home to a number of world-renowned universities and research institutions. The state's population is growing, and Wyoming is becoming increasingly diverse.

Wyoming is a state with a rich and fascinating history. From its earliest days as a home to nomadic hunters and gatherers to its present-day status as a modern and prosperous state, Wyoming has played an important role in the history of the American West.
